ASF are the Greek letters
that stand for the Fraternity of the Sons of Aesculapius. The Alpha Sigma Phi was founded
in 1959, making it the first fraternity established in UERM College of Medicine.
The Alpha Sigma Phi was founded by twenty blue boys, so
called because they were all members of the cream of the crop of their respective batches.
In establishing the fraternity, the original members were in effect espousing an idea, an
idea that shuns mediocrity and powered by the belief that each man has the innate capacity
to achieve and excel in his chosen field of endeavor by constantly seeking guidance and by
continuous and unfailing effort. These original members proved themselves worthy of this
idea. They excelled in both academics and extra-curricular activities during their student
days. The common denominator that binded this crop of Alphans was the total commitment
they demonstrated in the pursuit of their noble goals. With this kind of attitude, it is
not hard to equate an Alphan with that of a good doctor, a true son of Aesculapius, the
Greek god of medicine.
To write down all the names and achievements of the Alphans
will be a long list indeed. It is not the aim of this piece to dazzle but rather to
inspire although it is accompanied by a simple demand. A demand that anyone who wishes to
enter the portals of the fraternity must liberate himself from the shackles of mediocrity
forever. He must constantly strive for the betterment of himself for his God, country, and
people. Under the shining light and guidance of the illustrious Sons of Aesculapius, any
Alphan will find the road to achievement though long and rocky, but worthy to pursue ten
times over.
